Many people go to a chiropractor because they are in pain. In this first phase of care, the main goal is to reduce your symptoms (usually by 50-75%). Sometimes this will require daily visits, or three visits per week for about 4 weeks. Just like going to the gym, 1 treatment builds off the previous treatment so that there is an accummlating effect. Typically recovery starts off slow the first 2 weeks as if nothing is working. Then you have a good day. That is followed by some bad days. And then again good. . . bad. . . good. . . This roller coaster ride is a "hallmark" sign of natural healing. Patients are usually OK with it if we tell them up front what to expect. So don't be surprized when those bad spells return. I promise, you will get more of those days.
2 other early signs of true natural healing: your pain may move around - left side, right side, up your spine, down your spine. Its almost like we have to chase it around to get it out of your body; or you may find yourself able to get up and move around more easily inspite of persisting bad pain.
Most people are under the assumption that if they don't feel any pain that there is nothing wrong with them - that they are healthy. Unfortunately, pain is a very poor indicator of health. PAIN is your alarm. It will tell you when something really bad is going on but PAIN does NOT tell you when everything is OK! In fact, pain and other symptoms frequently only appear after a disease or other condition has become advanced.
For example, consider a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first develops or only after it has become serious? How about heart disease? Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear. Fortunately when you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains. And that is another problem.
We caution patients not to get a false sense of security just because symptoms are much less. The underlying CAUSE probably still exists and usually returns if you stop care or reduce care too much. It has been my experience after 27 years that relapses are very discouraging! ! ! Don't let that happen to you.
