End of Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

Planning one last end-of-summer road trip before Labor Day? In the rush to squeeze a little bit more time out of summer, don’t overlook important car safety measures. As many of us know, driving the speed limit and observing traffic signs is no guarantee that you’ll make it to your destination accident-free. Despite an increase in hands-free laws that forbid the use of handheld devices while driving, the temptation to check a text message or take a call has set off an epidemic of distracted driving across the country. Fender bender accidents and whiplash injuries are on the rise.

Summer is the most common time of year for car accident injuries, with the majority of accidents happening in August. Follow these tips from our Westlake chiropractor to stay safe on the road and reduce your risk for injury in a car accident.

3 Tips to Be a Safer Driver From Our Westlake Chiropractor

  1. Be a defensive driver. Defensive driving helps you prepare for the unexpected by learning to better control speed, anticipate problems from other drivers and learn how to safely manage road and weather conditions. While you can’t avoid every accident, learning to anticipate conditions that could lead to an accident can reduce your risk for injury.
  2. Position your seat correctly. If you sit too close to the steering wheel and are rear-ended, you could damage the ligaments in your knees as well as the ribs when the air bag deploys.
  3. Never use your phone while driving. Imagine this: you’re stopped at a light or sitting in traffic so it’s totally harmless to check your text messages, right? Think again! Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds is risky and dangerous. Being rear-ended at speeds as slow as 5mph can still cause serious whiplash injuries, headaches and neck pain. Don’t drive and text!

If you are in a car accident, even a “minor” fender bender, don’t delay treatment. The earlier our Westlake chiropractor diagnoses your injuries, the more we can do to safely manage pain and reduce the risk for long-term health problems.
